Family Portraits at The Carillon in Richmond V
The Carillon in Richmond VA located at Byrd Park (near Maymont) is such a beautiful location for a family portrait session. There are so many different scenarios to choose from all packed into one small area. There's the staircase leading up to the tower and all of the details on top which seem to be a favorite with the kids (especially little boys). My favorite spot is the beautiful walkway under a canopy of trees. I always feel like I'm entering some kind of magical forest! It's so beautiful and there is such variety that I've actually never left the Carillon, but one could easily find many other beautiful locations throughout Byrd Park.
I had such a wonderful time with the Pitera family. Little Arabelle, soon to be two, was so sweet. She gave me quite a workout though, but I was able to capture so many natural moments of her just exploring and being two! Kate, Arabelle's mom, was definitely thinking a head when she brought some vintage props to keep her active little girl in once place. For a few minutes anyway. They added a lot to the session! Kate collects vintage items (a girl after my own heart) and it is so much more meaningful when the props used are things that families love! The best was the vintage croquet set. I absolutely love how those images turned out. Kate definitely did her homework and was on the ball with styling too. At one point Chris, Arabelle's dad, had the croquet mallet resting on his shoulder and I said "oh that looks really cool" in which he replied "Kate told me to do it". I need to bring her on all my sessions! Enjoy!
Lifestyle Family Portraits at The Carillon at Byrd Park Richmond VA
Another beautiful day in the RVA and what better way to spend my morning than a lifestyle family portrait session with a wonderful family? Meet the Newsome Family. I had so much fun getting to know this family and photographing their adorable children Landon and Mackenzie. They both warmed up to me pretty quickly. Thanks to twelve years of teachingmiddle school I've learned a thing or two about connecting with kids and it comes in handy while photographing them!
When I first met Heather at the beginning of her session I asked how she foundme andit turns out that I used to teach with her cousin! When I was first starting out about 4 years ago I photographed Heather's cousin Melanie's maternity pictures and Heather sawthem andfound me on facebook. Once she told me I immediately saw the resemblance both physically and in their very sweet and gentle personalities. I knew it was going to be a fabulous session.
We met at The Carillon at Byrd Park. I was thrilled to see that the park hadnot been mowed yet and was covered in yellow buttercups. Where some may see weeds I see potentially for a beautiful photograph! Witheven a small patch of butter cups, dandelions or other flowery weeds I can create the illusion of a beautiful field of wild flowers!
Everything went so well during our session and when we came to the end I asked Heather if there was anything she'd like me to capture that I hadn't already. She asked for a couple pictures of her for her business. Naturally I asked what her business was and she replied, much to my surprise, photography. (Gulp) During our session there were no signs that Heather was a photographer. She let me run the show and very humbly admitted her experience only when I asked. We then spent the last 15 minutes or so talking shop.
One of the greatest compliments is when I amhired by another photographer, especially one as talented as Heather. Of course I looked her up as soon as I got home and was very thankful she didn't reveal her true identity until the end of our session. The pressure would have definitely been on.
Richmond Virginia Lifestyle Photography | Family Portraits at The Carillon at Byrd Park
Another fabulous family photography portrait session with the Larson family in the great Richmond VA. A city which I have grown to love since we moved here 6 years ago! This family is very special to me because they were among one of my very first "real" clients back when I was Dia Marie Photography and they've stuck with as I grew and evolved into Sarah Kane Photography. I photographed their oldest son Jaden when he turned 1-years-old, I took maternity photos of Nikki when she was pregnant with baby Alex and have taken family pictures for them every year since. It really is a special thing to be able to watch a family grow! I l love seeing how the kids change and grow into their own little personalities. Jaden and Alex are doing just that!
I'm a huge fan of lifestyle photography, which is when the focus is more on candid moments rather than posed pictures. The Larson's are also fans of this style of photography, so I am even more excited when I get to photograph them! Jaden wasn't very happy when we first started on this particular day, which was unusual because normally he warms up to me very quickly. We tried everything, but none of our shenanigans were working. There was only one thing that was going to make this little guy happy and that was the playground. He spotted it and couldn't get to it fast enough. I'm so glad he did because it allowed me to capture genuine happiness on both Jaden and Alex's faces! In my opinion there is no greater thing than seeing your children filled with happiness, laughter, and pure joy! The fact that I am able to capture these moments for families is just one of the many reasons why I love being a photographer!! I used to call it my job, but it really doesn't feel like a job (well maybe when I am up until 2am editing it starts to feel like a job) but just a little ;) Sometimes I still can't believe that this is my life. I am grateful every day to all of those who have made this possible and the Larson's are just one of many!
