Outdoor Maternity Preparation Guide

Clothing

  • Please be sure all clothing is ironed. Wrinkles will show in photos and may require additional editing fees.

  • Maternity clothing should be form-fitting to highlight your beautiful bump. Loose or baggy clothing can add unwanted bulk in photos.

  • In cooler months, consider layers such as open-front sweaters, coats, shawls, or scarves—as long as they don’t cover your belly.

Clothing for Spouse/Partner & Children

  • If you’ll be changing outfits, keeping your partner’s and children’s clothing simple works best.

  • Choose neutral tones that coordinate easily with all of your looks. Often, your partner can simply swap out a shirt to match your outfit change.

Full Sessions Only

  • I’ll bring a pop-up tent so you can change comfortably and privately.

  • If you’re wearing one of my studio gowns, please wear undergarments that coordinate with each gown. Many gowns are sheer, and undergarments may show through. If you’re comfortable going without, that’s perfectly fine and creates a cleaner look.

  • I always pose with care to ensure nothing private is visible.

  • For strapless or off-the-shoulder gowns, please wear a supportive strapless bra that matches the gown. Avoid tucking bra straps down, as this can create unflattering bulges that may require additional editing fees.

  • For longer dresses, I recommend bringing a pair of heels for added lift. They won’t show in photos—comfortable boots with a heel work great.

Makeup

  • I recommend at least a light application of foundation or powder, blush or bronzer, and mascara.

  • Double-check for makeup lines along the jawline and be sure everything is well blended. Visible lines can show in photos and may require additional editing fees.

  • Virtual makeup is available as an affordable and convenient alternative to professional makeup. It provides a naturally enhanced, camera-ready look without the extra time or cost. Ask me for details and current pricing.

Professional Hair & Makeup

  • If you’d like to be pampered with professional hair and makeup, I highly recommend KK Shoaf with Whole Life Beauty.

  • She specializes in natural or glam, camera-ready looks and will have you feeling confident, radiant, and ready for a dinner or evening out after your session.

Watch the Tan Lines

  • Tan lines—including those from watches or fitness bands—are difficult to edit and may require additional fees.

  • In the weeks leading up to your session, be mindful of sun exposure and strap marks, especially during summer months.

What to Bring

  • Plenty of water — hydration helps prevent dizziness or nausea, even on cooler days

  • A snack if you’re prone to low blood sugar

  • Comfortable walking shoes (you can change for photos)

  • Water shoes and a small towel if your session includes the river (you’ll only go in shin-deep, but the riverbed can be slippery)

  • Bug spray for wooded areas during warmer months

  • Optional: an ultrasound photo—it’s a sweet detail if you’d like to include it

  • A warm coat or blanket for colder months

  • A portable fan for hotter months
