Cake Smash in Richmond VA | 1 Year Portraits in Midlothian VA
If you’re looking for ideas for something other than a cake smash for your soon-to-be one year old’s portraits why not create the theme around his/her favorite food? That’s what these parents did and it is absolutely adorable! This little guy loves tacos and his face lit up when he saw them. No he didn’t make a huge mess, but that smile is priceless! They also decided to bring some donuts for dessert. I love how these portraits turned out!

Doesn’t this mama look gorgeous? I’m in love with this new gown that has been added to my collection of maternity gowns which are available to all of my maternity clients! No need to spend $200-$400 on a gown that you are only going to wear once.

What a fun maternity session this was! I love that this gorgeous mama wanted to include smoke bombs in her maternity portraits. There is definitely a learning curve to working with them and the wind, but I think these turned out absolutely stunning! Doesn’t she look like a force to be reckoned with?

You may be wondering how to keep a newborn asleep for their portrait session. There are no guarantees of course. Newborns are going to do whatever their instincts tell them, but there are some things parents can do at home a head of time for a better chance of a sleepy baby!
One tip is to keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session. It’s important though that you don’t keep them awake longer. Newborns need to sleep and if they are awake for too long they may become over tired and really hard to settle! 1 - 2 hours is the ideal time!

I just love this simple newborn session that is filled with neutral earth tones for this sweet baby girl! Don’t get me wrong, I do love some bold colors, but I also love the simplicity of neutrals and this little lady really pulled them off! And can we talk about that hair? I get so excited when I see a newborn come into the studio with a head full of hair!

This is one of my favorite locations for a maternity photography session! I spent a great deal of time scouting for the perfect location for water maternity photoshoots and I happened upon this little oasis! I’ve had other photographers and potential clients ask where this is and I’ve politely let them know that this one is my secret place reserved only for myself and clients!
When Should You Schedule a Newborn Photography Session? | Newborn Portraits in Richmond VA
The newborn phase is very brief. In a few short weeks after your baby’s birth he/she will begin to become more alert. They will begin to fill out and just like that they are no longer a newborn. For newborn studio portraits it’s important to photograph newborns within the first 3 weeks of birth. In my years of experience I find the 2nd week to be the sweet spot. In order to pose a newborn they must be sleepy and relaxed and still flexible for posing.
