I’ve been photographing this wonderful family for years now, and every session feels a little like catching up with old friends. It all started with maternity portraits!
Honestly, one of my favorite parts of this job is watching families grown. When you photograph a family over and over, you get to see the whole story unfold. The baby bump turns into a newborn, the newborn turns into a toddler, personalities develop and change, but one thing that never changes is the love. I don’t take that for granted.
For their fall pictures this year, we headed to one of my favorite spots in Church Hill, a little garden tucked into the neighborhood. If you’ve ever walked around Church Hill, you know the vibe: old brick everywhere, iron benches, gravel paths, and walls that have clearly been around a lot longer than any of us. That kind of character is hard to fake, and it makes such a great backdrop for family portraits. Nothing about it feels staged. It just feels like Richmond.
We got a little bit of everything. The boys together on the brick wall, the whole family on the garden steps, and their grandmother joined in for a few on the iron bench.
To this family and all of my families, thank you for trusting me with your special moments for so long. I can’t wait to see what next year looks like.

Fall family portraits in Church Hill, Richmond, Virginia by Sarah Kane Photography. A family I’ve photographed since maternity, in a garden full of old brick and character.
